Macs for Business, May 07
Just like making the right decision for your working space is so important, as is choosing the tools to do the job. The world is becoming more and more focused on technology, but should not mean you need to spend more time managing and fixing it - your business is too important for that. This is where Macs can help...
As you know, Apple's recent adverts (http://www.apple.com/uk/getamac/) have been mainly focused on Macs for homes. However, once you dispel the myths, and they are easily dispelled, all the features that make them the obvious home choice also make Macs the perfect business tool. Macs are:
- Compatible - operating in a standards-based world dictates compatibility (Microsoft Office, Web, Networking, File Sharing).
- User friendly - Apple have designed the Mac from the ground up (both hardware and software) with ease of use in mind.
- Reliable - Macs do not crash like Windows-based PCs.
- Cost effective - total cost of ownership, tkaing into account after sales support, is less with a Mac.
- Extensible - true plug and play for printers, cameras and other devices - you do not have to constantly download the latest drivers.
- Training/re-training done in hours, not days - learning the basics really is basic.
- Secure - Macs do not get viruses and have a very strong built in firewall.
- Fast - running memory-hungry applications is far less tedious on a Mac - that is why they are so commonplace in the media world.
- Mobile - multiple location working made extremely easy.
- Stylish (of course!) - they will impress your clients.
Apple are in a perfect position to take the business world by storm - for designers (sure) but for everyone else too.
So, in a nutshell, what makes Apples the perfect choice for SMEs? They are easily supported, comparatively priced, compatible and reliable - you will spend less time strugging with technology and have more time to run your business!
If you are already a Mac user and agree, or you are not but would like some more information, then check out London-based Mac support company, pebble.it - they offer a great support service for Mac-only or mixed-platform environments. Apple have also got some handy information on making the switch on their site at apple.com/uk/getamac.

Edinburgh Evening News, "New starts turn to office matchmaker"
A new scheme to match start-up businesses with spare office space has been launched in the Capital.
And the matching system, which allows fledgling companies in need of somewhere to operate from for the early stages of the business to rent workstations from firms with room to spare, is set to be rolled out across the UK within six months.
The service, www.officesharing.co.uk, is the brainchild of property manager Adam Hawkes, who launched it this month and has already matched up his first pair of clients. Mr Hawkes, who previously worked for City Executive Centres, managing buildings on Hanover Street and North ST. David Street, plans to "saturate the market" in Edinburgh, then expand to other Scottish and UK cities within six months.
Mr Hawkes said:"In my old job, we often got enquiries from Start Up companies, but serviced offices were too expensive for them.
"on the other hand, there are companies who take on extra office space to have room to expand, but don't need the space immediately. It makes sense to match them up."
OfficeSharing.co.uk: a revolution in small office space
Scottish-based website launches a unique service that introduces companies with free office space to small businesses needing a place to work.
Small businesses struggle to find a place to grow, so OfficeSharing.co.uk is excited to announce the launch of its innovative website. This service provides a list of available office spaces, workstations and self-contained units to rent on a flexible basis.
If an office is needed, it makes sense for start-ups, small businesses and one-man bands to keep the costs down. Business centres and serviced office space thrive on the small office market, but until OfficeSharing.co.uk, there has been no alternative for the thousands of smaller companies that can’t afford, justify or just don’t want a business centre.
Property agents can ignore this type of market, as it’s difficult to sell and provides little commission. However, if companies have space, that empty desk could be worth between £2,500 and £4,000 per year.
If your company has unused office space or workstations, you can set up an account and then complete the online forms. When registering a property, you simply tick the additional features and services offered, and add a photo if you wish. Once verified, your space is listed as available for prospective tenants. OfficeSharing.co.uk provides invaluable downloads, such as terms and conditions that you can adapt to cover the fine details of sharing an office. You will also find an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to determine Internet access or network sharing.
If you’re looking for space, OfficeSharing.co.uk offers a free search of properties. We provide a handy guide to let you know what facilities are available, such as Internet access, telephone answering and parking spaces. Once you’ve selected your properties, your details are sent to the manager of the property, after which a meeting is arranged to view the offices. It’s up to both parties to come to an agreement.
OfficeSharing.co.uk Director Adam Hawkes said: “Our unique concept works best when the those looking for an office have synergy with the company with space to offer. A good example of this is where we introduced a new advertising agency to a web developer outfit. It provided a more creative, dynamic environment for both companies and lucrative paths into new markets.” Gavin Strang, MP for Edinburgh East, said: “May I congratulate you on the initiative you are taking in launching new Scottish-based website OfficeSharing.co.uk. Initiatives of this type have the potential to help improve the efficiency of commerce in Scotland. May I wish this venture every success.”
